Rooftop solar maintenance checklist

A useful routine combines safe cleaning, performance monitoring, visual inspection, qualified electrical checks, and organized records.

Solar systems have no fuel delivery and relatively few moving parts, but they are not maintenance-free. Dust, shade growth, loose hardware, damaged cables, blocked drainage, inverter faults, communication loss, and unnoticed shutdowns can reduce output or create safety concerns.

Weekly or frequent monitoring check

  • Confirm the inverter or monitoring portal shows normal operation.
  • Look for persistent alarms, communication loss, or zero-generation days.
  • Compare performance with recent weather and the same period in prior months.
  • Record unexplained sustained changes instead of reacting to one cloudy day.

Cleaning: condition-based, not calendar-only

Cleaning frequency depends on dust, nearby roads or industry, birds, roof slope, rain, water quality, and monitored output. Use soft, appropriate tools and water that will not leave severe deposits. Follow module-manufacturer instructions. Avoid harsh abrasives, pressure that can damage seals, thermal shock from very cold water on hot glass, and unsafe roof work.

Safety first

Do not clean during unsafe weather, on fragile or wet roofs, near unprotected edges, or when cables and connectors appear damaged. Use trained personnel and suitable fall protection where required.

Monthly visual review

  • New shade from tree growth, structures, stored material, or antennas.
  • Cracked glass, discoloration, heavy deposits, or obvious module movement.
  • Loose-looking clamps, corrosion, bent members, or damaged roof fixings.
  • Exposed, sagging, chewed, or rubbing cables and loose conduits.
  • Open electrical boxes, water entry, insects, or damaged labels.
  • Blocked roof drains or water collecting around foundations.
  • Inverter vents blocked by dust, storage, or vegetation.

Periodic qualified electrical inspection

A trained technician should follow the equipment manuals and maintenance plan. Depending on the system, checks can include torque where permitted, insulation condition, connector integrity, earthing continuity, protection devices, enclosure seals, cable temperature concerns, inverter logs, string comparison, and thermal inspection. Live testing requires proper procedures and instruments.

After severe weather or roof work

Arrange an inspection after significant storms, water ingress, nearby lightning, construction, painting, waterproofing, tank replacement, or other roof work. Contractors may move cables, shade modules, disturb earthing, or damage conduits without realizing they are part of an operating power system.

Keep an operations file

  • Approved drawings and single-line diagram where applicable.
  • Module and inverter datasheets, serial numbers, and warranties.
  • Commissioning and meter records.
  • Monitoring login and communication details.
  • Cleaning and inspection dates.
  • Alarm history, service tickets, photographs, and replaced parts.
  • Emergency shutdown steps and contact details.

When to call service immediately

Seek qualified help for burning smell, smoke, heat damage, arcing sound, exposed conductor, repeated protection trips, water inside equipment, severe physical damage, battery alarms, or a persistent inverter fault. Do not repeatedly reset equipment without understanding the cause.

Use performance as a maintenance signal

Weather changes daily, so raw generation alone is noisy. Compare normalized or expected trends where possible, review similar periods, and investigate consistent mismatch between strings or a sustained decline. Monitoring is most valuable when the original commissioning baseline is saved.
